An Opera Weekend, DMMO

Des Moines Metro Opera's 49th Season, mid-July 2021. A collage of each of four opera experiences. Clockwise from upper left: Jean Philippe Rameau's Platee; Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd; Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Queen of Spades: and Gregory Spear's Fellow Travelers. All wonderful, but standouts to me were the Rameau (DMMO's first foray into French Baroque) and the Spears (the lavender scare meets the music of the medieval troubadours).

The Fellow Travelers creative team's talkback on July 17. Center is the author on whose book the production is based, Thomas Mallon.
